چکیده

The scale of design teams for complex engineering products poses problems associated with the representation of the activities and interactions of designers on a social level. Conventional project management representations of organisation charts and graphs about deliverables are not likely to offer understandable overviews about how the team is performing on a social level. The aim of this article is to describe a new way to represent design activities through information visualisation using rules relating to language-based descriptions of actions, events, and objects in design team communication. We developed new methods in the field of information visualisation to represent patterns in design team communication that may indicate the social accounting of teamwork. We tested the method on a conversation during the conceptual design of a consumer artefact by a welldescribed team in the research literature to test whether our visualisation method could uncover some dynamics of teamwork.

The Nature of Collaboration in Computer Supported Designing

The purpose of the present study was to examine how a web-based networked learning environment (Future Learning Environment, FLE-Tools) supported collaborative designing. We organized a course in which teams of first-year university level textile students (N=31) solved an authentic and complex design task with the help of the collaborative environment. A problem addressed in the study was to ex...

Enhancing Data-Driven Collaboration with Large-Scale Interactive Tabletops

Reality-based interfaces (RBIs) such as tabletop and tangible user interfaces offer unique opportunities for enhancing data-driven collaboration. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a large-scale interactive tabletop for augmenting data-driven colocated meetings of larger teams (8-12 participants). We also discuss usability challenges for large-scale tabletop interaction...

Design Patterns for Cross-Cultural Computer-Supported Collaboration

This paper introduces design patterns for cross-cultural computer-supported collaborative design learning. It presents four patterns derived from an in-depth analysis of interactions between Hong Kong and Korean distributed teams and a cross-cultural comparison of interactions within these teams to interactions in Hong Kong/Austrian, Hong Kong/USAmerican and Hong Kong/Taiwanese teams. The patte...

The Multimedia Online Collaboration Architecture: Tools to Enable Distance Learning

MOCA is a suite of Internet multimedia tools to facilitate groupwork in a distance-learning environment, built using standard Java utilities. MOCA’s original aim was to allow several users to work simultaneously on multimedia documents using a multimedia whiteboard. But now MOCA supports both asynchronous and synchronous collaboration models. Tools for asynchronous multimedia presentation, anno...

Role of Information Technology, Incentives, and Collaboration for Concurrent Teams

Concurrent team strategy is widely employed by firms in large projects. This research investigates the design of incentives and the role of collaboration for concurrent teams. Proposing and studying two types of reward policies: individual-based reward (IBR) and group-based reward (GBR), we characterize the structure of incentives, and demonstrate that firms can achieve maximal profits with col...
